GRAND STAIRCASE
| The grand staircase in the mansion is original to the house. Many fancy staircases of this era were two stories high, leading to the ballroom on the third floor. But the Ivinsons had only this one-story staircase. The "flying" or "floating" staircase is special because it is apparently balanced so well that if the walls fell down the staircase would be self-supporting. The newel post at the base of the stairs is from the Durlacher house, which now is the Salvation Army building. The Durlachers were related to the Roaches, who gave their home at 15th and Grand to the Laramie Plains Museum Association for use as a museum. The original newel post was probably sold by the Episcopal church. |
